Project Title: Gesu After-School Programming
Project Description:
Gesu School is an independent Catholic Jesuit school serving 400 children (99% African American), pre-k through 8th grade, on a first-come, first-served basis. Our students come from challenging circumstances, and we resolve to sustain an environment in which they can heal, thrive, and succeed. Gesu educates students in Philadelphia’s poorest zip codes. If our students did not attend Gesu, they would attend some of the poorest-performing public schools in the state. Seventy percent of our students come from single-adult homes, most with multiple children, and one in three Gesu families live on an income below $25,000.
Gesu’s After-School program provides care and enriching activities in a structured environment. The program offers a healthy snack, homework time, and age-appropriate recreational and educational activities to help students stay engaged, including sports, arts and theater (with performance opportunities), and field trips. Partnerships with organizations such as the Kimmel Center, Girls First, Boys Scouts, and Girl Scouts offer more in-depth programming for personal and academic growth and cultural awareness. The after-school program is managed by experienced professionals and volunteers from local universities.
The After-School Program remains one of Gesu’s most important provisions for the families we serve, with upward of 100 children attending per day. The program provides care and enriching activities in a safe, structured environment. Running from 3 PM-6 PM, a dedicated group of staff and volunteers create a space where pre-k-8th grade students per day can learn and grow. The objective is to fill a gap in care while parents/guardians work into the evening, while going above and beyond the scope of general supervision. The program offers a variety of activities to help students stay engaged, improving classroom performance and setting the standard for middle-high school years.
