Project Title: Haitian Early Learning & Enrichment Program (HELE Program)
Project Description:

Many Haitian immigrant children in Palm Beach County struggle in school as a result of language and cultural barriers, poverty, and parents who are un/undereducated and skilled who lack the capacity to monitor their children’s academics. 50% of parents in HTPB’s Children Enrichment Program never graduated high school and have poor support systems in place. As witnessed by HTPB over the past 12 years through its Children’s Enrichment Program, many of these children do not develop a solid foundation in the lower grades as a result of the above mentioned obstacles, thus creating educational challenges that escalate each ensuing year. A 2002 study (University of Michigan) found that 80% of students surveyed based their self-worth on academic performance. A 2006 study (King’s College) showed that students with poor self-esteem are more likely to have poor health, be involved in dysfunctional behavior and earn less than their peers leading to poor performance, failure, discouragement, and poor self-worth; a viscous cycle. Although many Haitian parents are eager to help their children, they often lack knowledge, direction and guidance on what they can do to improve their child’s academics, as well as lacking the resources to do so. HTPB is one of the few resource centers in PBC that targets the Haitian community and that provides services in their native language of Haitian Creole.
Funding is requested to prepare Haitian children for success in school in at-risk families, and to build strong character traits in students. HTPB has the potential to reach the Haitian parent population to to enroll their children in the HELE Program, which will academically prepare ten (10) 4 yr. old children for Kindergarten, and the Academic Enrichment & Mentoring Program for 25 children in grades K-6, with an emphasis on the lower grades, K-3.
