Project Title: Music STEPS – (Students Transformed through Education and Performance Skills)
Project Description:

Music STEPS (Students Transformed through Education and Performance Skills) provides free after-school music lessons and instruments for 495 children (160 – pre-school age and 335 – elementary age) in 9 Title 1 schools, two (2) social service agencies, and one (1) community center in two (2) counties who would otherwise not have access to arts education. Participating students in pre-school and grades 3, 4 and 5 receive free music lessons once a week for up to two hours during the school year. Elementary school age students receive wind, brass, percussion or string instruments that they take home for practice. Lessons include violin, percussion, band, and/or recorder.

Pre-school age children, 2 to 6 year old, receive 34 – 45 weeks of six (6) – 20 minute early childhood music development classes that include singing, poetry, moving, focused listening, musical games, exploring musical instruments, creative movement, and storytelling using language within a musical context. FYO’s STEPS has inaugurated two popular elementary school band programs in Broward County. In addition to music training, STEPS offers a range of image building activities and experiences working with professional musicians who serve as role models. Recitals in each school enable students to exhibit their new talents to classmates and guests.

At each of our Music STEPS sites, located in underserved communities, at least two recitals are offered free to school and community members. Recitals in each site enable students to exhibit their new talents to classmates and guests. The music selections played at these recitals introduce students and their families to classical music, often for the first time. Many STEPS children exhibit talent and have been accepted into county arts-magnet schools. Some have advanced to join the Florida Youth Orchestra.
