Project Title: Increasing Therapeutic Arts Programming for Philly Youth
Project Description:
ArtWell supports youth development through healing-centered arts education. We have 25 years of experience integrating arts into education, helping scholars with limited access to arts education develop social-emotional skills and explore their identities. We serve approximately 1,000 students across 18 sites.
ArtWell has four programs that run for 25 weeks over the school year and 6-8 weeks during summer:
1) We the Poets® (WTP): WTP is ArtWell’s longest-running program. The program uses the mediums of reading, discussing, writing, and performing poetry to nurture students’ ability to communicate and express themselves emotionally, while also enhancing their literacy skills and reading levels.
2) The Art of Growing Leaders® (AGL): AGL engages students in multidisciplinary art projects focused on social impact. Through guided collage, painting, mask-masking, and other art-based projects, students build communities of trust with one another while exploring their identities and aspirations. Students take inventory of their values and their unique qualities and learn how to leverage them in their community.
3) EcoArts® uses art, poetry, and reflection to engage youth in exploring and redefining what the “environment” means to them. The program invites students to reflect on how they can impact and care for their surroundings and how the environment can impact their lives and well-being. Participants use arts and poetry to imagine the world they want to live in and advocate for environmental sustainability.
Support from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation will cover essential costs such as art supplies, teacher stipends, and trauma training for teaching artists.
