Project Title: NOJO Youth Orchestra
Project Description:

The mission of New Orleans Jazz Orchestra is to strengthen the legacy of Jazz throughout New Orleans by providing access to unparalleled performances, creative gathering places, and authentic community engagement. As the largest Black-run Jazz institution in the South, for 22 years NOJO has been a steadfast presence in New Orleans’ cultural landscape and an unwavering partner to the community in advancing and preserving Black culture and arts. Our goal is to bring our diverse community together through music, artistry, and creative development. NOJO aims for everyone in our programs to experience a meaningful encounter with Jazz while enhancing their life. For students with a passion for Jazz, their options are limited. There are no “Big Band” Jazz orchestras offered in New Orleans public schools. We aim to advance students’ music education by providing mentorship clinics with touring Jazz musicians, jam sessions, and “Big Band” ensemble training to continue the legacy and future of Jazz. As our longest standing program, the NOJO Youth Orchestra serves 1,500 children (ages 10-18) each year and has been in existence for 15 years.
