Project Title: Academic Enrichment Program
Project Description:

For more than 25 years, Parker Street Ministries (PSM) has been committed to Gospel-centered community development in an impoverished, high crime neighborhood in Lakeland, Florida, consisting of more than 600 addresses. The Parker Street neighborhood is majority-populated by people of color, many of whom suffer under bonds of generational poverty. A 2024 survey of families served by PSM shows the majority (around 95 percent) fall into the “low” to “extremely low” income categories. Stabilization opportunities are provided by PSM in education as well as housing, financial sustainability, health/wellness, workforce development, spiritual formation, neighborhood revitalization, and more. We currently offer some services to an adjacent neighborhood (North Lake Wire) and hope to open up more services as we are able.

Most services offered by PSM are delivered through an after-school program and summer camp, providing year-round academic enrichment for K-12 students. Neighborhood parents express the need for safe childcare and academic support. Parker Street Ministries addresses these challenges through a year-round Academic Enrichment Program (AEP) which includes after-school and summer opportunities for grades K-8, a Young Adult Program (YAP) for grades 9-12, and a summer Workforce Lab for young high schoolers, each designed to equip students with the tools necessary for academic, personal, and professional success. Parker Street Ministries also offers next steps coaching and micro-internships for older high schoolers and recently graduated young adults.

The Academic Enrichment Program includes homework help and tutoring, physical fitness activities, STEM projects, rotations in art and cooking, emotional regulation techniques and curriculum, summer educational/fun field trips, and more!

In 2024, 864 hours of programming served more than 100 students, reinforcing essential skills while fostering a safe, structured environment where learning flourishes. All services are free, except a weekly summer camp fee of $10 per child that many parents substitute through volunteer service.

Total Project Budget: $586,648.35

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Our funding sources include a variety of individuals, companies, churches, local government, and foundations. In 2024, PSM raised $1,266,296.51 in operational support through these entities. Some committed revenue this year for the Academic Enrichment Program includes Kiwanis Club of the Citrus Center Foundation – $5,000+ (amount depends on how much revenue is collected from Kiwanis’ annual pancake festival and divided amongst nine nonprofits); George Jenkins Foundation – $50,000; Camp Rotary Foundation – $3,000; and Start Smart Education Essentials donors, providing backpacks, school supplies, uniforms, and more for neighborhood kids – $7,000 (amount could change depending on # of donors this summer). This funding does not include committed operational support that would also help cover AEP expenses. Some of those funders include George Jenkins Foundation – an additional $100,000; Harrell Family Charities – $100,000; David Jenkins – $30,000; recurring monthly donations – $167,000+; and more!
