Project Title: Pet Therapy for Child Advocacy Center
Project Description:

The funds will be used to expand our Paws for Patients Facility Dog program at Navicent Health Foundation to serve the Crescent House, our Child Advocacy Center at Beverly Knight Olson Children’s Hospital. Pet therapy in child advocacy centers (CACs) can significantly benefit children by offering a calming and reassuring presence during stressful forensic interviews and other proceedings, helping them feel more comfortable and cooperate during trauma-related work.
Since beginning services in 1997, Crescent House has cared for more than 11,700 children. Crescent House is not a shelter but a facility supplied with state-of-the-art equipment that enables specially trained professionals to conduct effective, consistent, non-threatening interviews and examinations of children who have made these allegations.
We specialize in offering the following services to children of our Central and South Georgia community: forensic interviews conducted by specially trained interviewers with over 33 years of combined experience , forensic medical exams provided by a Board Certified Child Abuse Pediatrician with 11 years of experience and a specially trained Nurse Practitioner with 8 years of experience.
The use of a facility dog in the Crescent House will provide a calming presence, promote interaction & connection, promote a safe space, improve communication, increase cooperation during interview, reducing sensory overload and provide comfort while waiting.
Since placing our first facility dog, we have seen a decrease in anxiety and stress associated with the hospital environment, increased support in the overall social, physical and emotional development and treatment of patients. He provides distraction and support during procedures, as well as motivates and encourage patients to reach treatment goals. He provides comfort following traumatic events, reduces feelings of loneliness associated with being separated from home, family and pets, and most importantly, offers unconditional love and acceptance through physical contact and soft touch.
