Project Title: Gainesville Empowerment Zone Family Learning Center
Project Description:

Gainesville for All is a community based nonprofit which advocates for racial and socioeconomic inequities. We launched the Gainesville Empowerment Zone Family Learning Center (GEZFLC) to serve children six weeks to four years old with quality education and care. Located in a targeted geographic zone, the center confronts challenges that face Black and low-income families. The need for advocacy was affirmed with the report, “Understanding Racial Inequity in Alachua County, 2018.” The study revealed that African American students have lower graduation rates in Alachua County than any other race. We have partnered with the Alachua County School District and they have provided us with a building, in-kind located at Metcalfe Elementary School, one of the lowest performing elementary schools in Alachua County. The GEZFLC serves as a pilot program to prove publicly funded early childhood education facilities should be opened on public school campuses. We believe our programming will result in significantly improved kindergarten readiness. Based on data that shows 90 percent of a child’s critical brain architecture is formed in the first five years of life, we are convinced early learning is the way forward. Our short term goals for long term outcomes are: improved kindergarten readiness and increased parental involvement. The GEZFLC supports low-income families by providing tuition scholarships. We believe providing high-quality early childhood education and a wealth of resources to parents and families can level the playing field for Black and low income people, resulting in better academic achievement, higher-paying jobs, and fewer interactions with the criminal justice system. Our GEZFLC Family Engagement Specialist connects families to vital community resources. We also provide meals to students at no cost to families. In addition we provide free dental screenings and connect students to free dental care. Thank you for taking the time to review our program.
