Project Title: Point and Shoot
Project Description:

Point and Shoot works with teens living in foster care, ages 10-18, to develop their personal artistic expression through weekly classes and assignments. Sessions address visualization, selective focus, creative composition, and basic concepts of art and photography, with emphasis placed on the balance of technology and visual ability.

Each Point and Shoot program is run by one volunteer photographer who uses CFKF curriculum to structure each session. Each session is an hour-long each week. CFKF provides each participant with a point and shoot digital camera and instruction on how to create art through photography. Weekly workshops and assignments teach basic concepts of art and photography, including composition, light, shapes, silhouettes and editing. The overarching goal is to teach participants a new way to "see" and to develop a strong artistic eye. Students receive a homework assignment each week, and at the end of the 8-week program, they take a field trip for a photo shoot day at a picturesque location. The program encourages steadfast participation and promotes self-confidence while giving children creative and technical skills. At the end of the course, children’s works are proudly showcased in a gallery photography exhibit.
In South Florida, Point and Shoot is currently running at 19 locations, including Pace Center for Girls, SOS Children’s Village, HANDY/Guardian ad Litem, Boys and Girls Club-Riviera Beach, and several other foster-child serving organizations. Each collaborating location typically runs two eight-week Point and Shoot programs per year, with 10-12 children in each session.
