Project Title: In Jacob’s Shoes
Project Description:
The stark reality of a child’s life who lives in poverty is best explained by a seasoned teacher, Marc Cutillo, who had many of these young people in his classrooms. "Half of life is just showing up," said Cutillo in an article in Education Week. Mr. Cutillo repeated that phrase to his students who were regularly absent from school, until a young child (six years old) curtly responded, "Sometimes I can’t find a way to show up."
Children this young are not playing hooky or uninterested in learning—five minutes alone with any 1st grader yields more questions than you can answer without jumping on Wikipedia. The reasons these children stay home can all be traced to poverty. Having to care for younger siblings, not having school supplies, and not having shoes are all conditions frequently occurring in low-income families.
Since 2009, In Jacob’s Shoes has been addressing these issues and has provided over 80,000 pairs of new and refurbished shoes and 5,000 backpacks complete with school supplies for children in need living in South Florida. These children live in poverty, are homeless, or live in shelters. The shoes, backpacks and school supplies are distributed for children in need via requests made by schools, shelters, charities and social service organizations and agencies which have prequalified the children and families. In Jacob’s Shoes also distributes shoes and supplies at back-to-school events in multiple locations.
