Project Title: Musical Sprouts Children’s Educational Program at SAMMinistries’ Transitional Living & Learning Center
Project Description:

Musical Sprouts at SAMMinistries: Project Description

Musical Bridges Around the World (MBAW) seeks $10,000 to implement our Musical Sprouts program at SAMMinistries Transitional Living and Learning Center’s Children’s Enrichment Center, serving 35 children experiencing housing insecurity over one year.

Need: Children experiencing housing insecurity face significant challenges that impact their educational outcomes and social-emotional development. In San Antonio, where 25.7% of children live below the federal poverty line, these challenges are particularly acute. According to the U.S. Department of Education, students in high-poverty schools are 50% less likely to receive arts education, creating an "arts opportunity gap" that disproportionately affects vulnerable children.

Program: Musical Sprouts integrates multicultural music experiences with social-emotional learning through 80 lessons (2 lessons/week for 40 weeks). Professional teaching artists will lead activities including:
Cultural exploration through music, stories, and visual arts
Hands-on instrument learning
Collaborative creative projects
Live concert experiences

Expected Outcomes: The program will improve participants’ social-emotional learning as measured by the Devereaux Student Strengths Assessment (DESSA), focusing on:
Self-awareness and self-management
Relationship skills
Goal-directed behavior
Decision-making

Implementation: MBAW’s experienced teaching artists will deliver curriculum adaptable to different age groups and learning styles, using trauma-informed practices. SAMMinistries staff will collaborate to ensure program alignment with children’s needs.

Evaluation: Progress will be measured through pre/post DESSA assessments, attendance tracking, staff observations, and feedback surveys.

This project directly aligns with the Hermanowski Family Foundation’s mission to improve children’s lives by providing tools for success through arts, education, and welfare services.

Total Project Budget: $10000
