Project Title: Empowering Students with Behavioral and Emotional Challenges
Project Description:

Behavioral and emotional challenges among Texas children are at an all-time high, impacting families, schools, and communities. Nearly 17% of Texas children—1.2 million—experience mental, emotional, or behavioral health issues, yet the state ranks last in youth mental health care access, with only 10 child psychiatrists per 100,000 children. Many families face limited resources, as public schools lack specialized support and private schools often turn away students due to their needs.

The Harris School (THS) is the only private school in Houston and Texas exclusively serving children with behavioral challenges who do not have severe developmental disabilities. As a nonprofit, THS provides a vital alternative for PreK3 to sixth-grade students who struggle in traditional settings. Many students face challenges related to ADHD, autism spectrum disorder (high-functioning), mood disorders, or sensory processing issues. While they have average or above-average intelligence, their behavioral needs require a more supportive environment.

THS integrates therapeutic and academic programs to foster student growth. Our therapeutic approach includes family collaboration, sensory integration, emotional regulation, and social skills groups. The academic program emphasizes individualized learning, social-emotional integration, and project-based activities while meeting Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills standards. Through small group instruction and one-on-one support, we help students regulate emotions, build relationships, and develop problem-solving skills, fostering confidence and resilience.

This grant will help us achieve our 2025 goals: expanding capacity by hiring additional teachers, incorporating on-site clinical and support services to address holistic student and family needs, and enriching education programs by increasing curriculum specialist hours to ensure tailored learning plans. Your support will empower more students to overcome challenges, succeed academically, and thrive socially.
