Project Title: Caribbean Roots, American Dreams: A Museum Experience for 500 Children
Project Description:
Island SPACE Caribbean Museum seeks funding to provide 500 children, ages 4-18, with an enriching, educational experience at our cultural institution over the next year. While Broward County Public Schools facilitates field trips for some students, budget constraints have left many children—particularly those in micro-schools and homeschooling communities—without the opportunity to visit. This grant would allow us to bridge that gap, ensuring that more young learners, from elementary through high school, can explore the vibrant history and contributions of Caribbean people in an engaging, interactive setting.
At Island SPACE, students embark on an immersive journey through history, learning about influential figures, artistic traditions, and pivotal events that have shaped the Caribbean and influenced the evolution of the United States. Visits include guided tours, hands-on activities like scavenger hunts, and creative workshops where students craft their own take-home items inspired by Caribbean culture. By engaging with the exhibits, children gain a deeper appreciation for their own heritage or the diverse cultures within their community.
With 1 in 4 South Florida residents tracing their roots to the Caribbean, this initiative fosters a sense of belonging and pride, particularly among children who rarely see their family’s history recognized in mainstream education. The requested funding would fully underwrite admission fees for 500 students at $20 each, ensuring accessibility regardless of financial barriers. Chaperones would be admitted at no cost. Additionally, Island SPACE would seek matching resources to promote this program and coordinate visits for those with demonstrated need.
By supporting this initiative, the Hermanowski Family Foundation will help us inspire the next generation, enriching their understanding of history, heritage, and achievement. These experiences leave a lasting impact, empowering children to take pride in their roots and see themselves as part of a larger, meaningful narrative.
