Project Title: Helping At-Risk High School Students in Palm Beach County Earn Their Diploma
Project Description:
Quantum and Worthington High Schools are nonprofit charter sister high schools in the Second Mile Education network. The schools utilize Second Mile Education’s proven model to deliver innovative programming and curricula designed for at-risk students. While research demonstrates that high-need, high-risk students benefit from a comprehensive instructional approach to meet their needs and provide support for sustained success, traditional education approaches don’t have the bandwidth to provide these resources. With one student abandoning high school altogether every 26 seconds, the need for a transformational approach for at-risk students is clear. It is with these students in mind that Quantum and Worthington High Schools respectfully request $10,000 from the Hermanowski Foundation to ensure high school graduation for all students in Palm Beach County.
At orientation, each student receives a customized plan that includes traditional classes, personal and social support services such as family support and career guidance, and flexibility. Multiple tracks are offered with classes are available from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each weekday, allowing students the time for not only school, but also family and work obligations. Student progress is monitored and presented via the Success Dashboard, offering feedback, coursework status, attendance records, grades, and credits earned. To facilitate full personalization, programming is computer-based but teacher-directed, allowing students to work at their own pace and receive assistance from teachers when needed. For students with external challenges, the schools employ on-site Family Support Specialists who work closely with teachers, counselors, and community resources ensuring students have the support needed to graduate. Career Coaches provide additional instructional time focused on employability, career and college readiness, and postsecondary options, and Career and Technical Education provides role-specific training and certification designed around in-demand jobs. Each year, these schools serve more than 700 students and help more than 250 to graduate.
