Project Title: Environmental Education for Children and Families
Project Description:

The Sisters of Saint Joseph are a congregation of Catholic sisters present in the greater NYC area and Puerto Rico since 1856. Dedicated to the service of God and the dear neighbor without distinction, the Sisters of Saint Joseph have started hundreds of schools, two colleges, hospitals, childcare institutions, and eldercare facilities. In addition, our sisters have built supportive family housing, launched services to justice-involved women and their children, and developed literacy programs for immigrant women. Today, we sponsor 4 high schools, an immigration law center, two spirituality centers, and a program for refugees providing comprehensive resettlement services.
Since 1896, our headquarters have been at a 212-acre campus in Brentwood, NY – a struggling, industrialized community of 62,000. The site of numerous community programs open to all, the campus also contains a 3,000-panel solar array, organic farms, woodlands, rain gardens, and native grass meadows.
One of our most impactful programs is CSJ Garden Ministry – a 7-acre community garden that consists of 24 raised-bed plots for community use, goats, chickens, a barn, a vegetable garden, and a wheat field. Vegetables, flour and eggs are available to anyone in need.
CSJ Garden Ministry also offers free environmental programming to children and families. With a small staff, these are only offered part-time, but in 2024 we impacted 739 children. However, we have dreams of reaching more (at least 1300) and request a grant to meet a portion of the salary of an Environmental Educator. With this position in place, CSJ Garden Ministry will realize the following.
• Launch of an outdoor pre-school program.
• Creation of a children’s garden with native and pollinator-friendly species and food crops.
• Addition of a children’s nature club utilizing campus woodlands, farmlands, meadows and gardens.
• Collaboration with the Brentwood schools to create environmental education projects.
• 10 new intergenerational educational offerings.
