Project Title: Benevilla Intergenerational Program – Creating Intergenerational Connections
Project Description:

Benevilla’s mission is to enrich lives. Established in 1981, Benevilla has a broad array of community based programs. Benevilla’s Intergenerational Program (IG) was started in 2009 after opening our childcare and preschool program, Wirtzie’s. Benevilla’s IG program in conjunction with Wirtzie’s Preschool & Childcare provides meaningful, creative and engaging social activities for young children ages 1-5 years with older adults who have early to moderate stages of Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias, who attend our Lucy Anne’s Place Life Enrichment Adult Day Program. We currently have two IG spaces: Art’s Center for All Ages Intergenerational Room and the Intergenerational Garden on our campus. Eight to ten times a week a group of children (from the same classroom) are brought to one of the two IG spaces for a 30-minute IG session with participating “Grandmas” and “Grandpas” from Lucy Anne’s Place. Specific IG activities include but are not limited to: drumming circles, interactive music, yoga, dance, gardening, games, baking, and art projects. Intergenerational programs provide unique benefits for each participating population. According to Generations United, the following are a sampling of benefits for young children, including developing better communication skills, empathy, respect for others, higher levels of interactive play, and improved abilities with cooperative play. The requested funding will help to provide program supplies and equipment for our IG activities and also allow us to bring in contracted external partners to enhance our programming such as children zoo programs, music and creative art providers. Program goals include: 1) Serving 100 unduplicated kids through the IG program, 2) Maintaining a robust IG calendar with a minimum of 30 activities offered monthly, and 3) Meet a minimum of one of the seven International Council on Active Aging’s Dimensions of Wellness at each IG activity (intellectual, physical, social, spiritual, vocational, emotional, and environmental).
