Project Title: Emergency Foster Shelter Program
Project Description:
Grandma’s Place’s (GP) Emergency Shelter Program offers emergency residential shelter for children who’ve been removed from their homes for their safety by the Department of Children & Families (DCF). These children are victims of abuse, mistreatment, & neglect, & many have varying severities of intellectual & developmental disabilities.
The shelter is open 24/7/365 to intake children from birth to 12 years who have been removed from their own home by DCF. GP is unique to PBC in that it accepts all children with disabilities & is the ONLY shelter certified to care for both genders birth– 7.
The first objective is to welcome the incoming child, assure them that they are safe, & try to make the environment as comfortable as possible. Trained, experienced staff greet & reassure each child, who are often confused or upset. Children then receive a physical evaluation within 72 hours of their arrival by a local pediatrician & are given treatment if needed. The children are provided with appropriate dental care & immunizations needed to attend school.
Individual case plans are designed & administered that address each child’s unique needs. Children enrolled in school continue their education at their existing institute whenever possible, & our staff coordinates with school administration to ensure there is no disruption in schooling. Children with disabilities are taken to appropriate schools for their learning needs.
Quarterly meal plans are developed by a registered dietitian & ensure the children receive proper nutrition. Clothing for both genders, & pajamas in all sizes are available for the children, as are diapers, wipes, & other supplies should they need it. The program’s objective is to make these children feel safe & to work with the DCF to find a suitable foster/adoptive family if replacement with non-offending family isn’t possible. In 2024, the shelter served 27.
