Project Title: Children’s Patient Navigation Program
Project Description:

When a child is diagnosed with cancer, their days quickly fill with treatments and doctor visits. Their parents struggle to analyze overwhelming information to achieve the best outcome for their child. This always involves a myriad of medical specialties and procedures. Low-income families face greater obstacles to achieving positive outcomes due to socioeconomic barriers.

Even families fortunate to have some form of health insurance struggle with extremely high deductibles, inflated prescriptions costs, and innumerable out-of-pocket and uncovered expenses. When you also consider that one parent usually must quit their full-time job to care for their sick child, as this is often what is necessary, it is not surprising that families often find themselves in severe financial crisis and on the verge of homelessness.

Studies have found that, across all ethnic, gender, and socioeconomic groups, cancer remains a leading cause of death for children between the ages of 1-15 in the United States (Centers for Disease Control, 2024). However, in children ages 1-14, cancer is the second leading cause of death, and an estimated 1,040 children under the age of 15 are expected to die from cancer in 2024 (American Cancer Society, 2024).

Sadly, in line with the overall national trend, Palm Beach County has a high number of children diagnosed with cancer each year. In fact, Palm Beach County has the 3rd highest percentage of child cancer patients in the state of Florida and an alarmingly high percentage of uninsured and underinsured children.

We work collaboratively with the child’s family, medical team and through outreach to local, state, and national resources to ensure that each child’s needs are met. Our method of coordinating education and support is critical and has been shown to increase quality of life AND overall chance of recovery and survival.
