Project Title: Emergency Shelter for Families with Children
Project Description:

At Family Promise of Coastal Alabama, we are dedicated to providing essential support and hope to families with children experiencing homelessness in our community. As Mobile’s only transitional housing program that welcomes families including fathers, we serve as a vital lifeline for families who might otherwise have nowhere else to turn. We have been operating for more than 20 years. In that time, affordable housing has drifted further and further out of reach for families with low income.

As recently as 2020, the Mobile County Public School System identified 5000 students who were unhoused. The numbers of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) for children experiencing homelessness are high, predicting poor medical and mental health outcomes as they become adolescents and adults. Children with high ACEs are also more likely to experience homelessness as adults, leading to intergenerational cycles of poverty, homelessness, and poor health (The Burke Foundation, 2024). With the right help, however, families can secure sustainable housing and other services and continue to live together. FPCA is for all families in a housing crisis without regard to race, ethnicity, creed, religious affiliation, gender or national origin.

Our organization operates with a trauma-informed service approach, ensuring that every family member is treated with dignity, empathy, and care as they work toward stability. And, critically, we provide shelter, meals, life skills education, and case management entirely at no cost to the families we serve.

Over the past twelve months, we have supported 131 families through our housing programs and community outreach. We work with hundreds of volunteers and community partners to provide shelter and related services 365 days a year. A donation of $5,000 from your organization could help us provide shelter, meals, education assistance, and art classes for up to a dozen children.
