Project Title: GO Tutoring and Mentorship
Project Description:

Golden Opportunity (GO) provides free one-on-one tutoring and mentorship to economically disadvantaged students in grades 2 to 8 in the Ithaca City School District. GO is not just a program; it’s a safety net for disinvested students and caregivers. GO tutors meet with their students twice weekly for an hour each session, after school and on-site, for a seamless end-of-day transition- more than 80 hours of additional academic support every year for every GO student. Most GO tutors are retired teachers, and leveraging the respected status of retired teachers within the school community enhances GO’s ability to build meaningful connections with students who may otherwise go unnoticed due to quietness or undiagnosed learning issues. GO Tutors are paid $30 per hour for tutoring and in-service meetings. By providing seven years of unwavering support from the same role model, we help set students up for success by creating consistent and long-term relationships where the tutor can provide focused care. GO students and their caregivers lack access to transportation and face food insecurity and housing instability, and these hardships make access to free resources even more critical. The access to participation and advocacy GO offers students is life-changing. GO firmly believes that every child needs a champion, someone to advocate for their best interests and offer a chance to achieve success in school and life. GO’s proven model has helped thousands of ICSD students change their life trajectories, gain confidence in their school environment, and compete with their peers to attend two- and four-year colleges.
