Project Title: Orchestra Miami/ Carnegie Hall Link Up Program
Project Description:
Orchestra Miami has been a leader in introducing children to classical music in South Florida. Since 2008, Orchestra Miami has introduced over 35,000 students to high-quality classical music for free through our various in-school initiatives. The main focus of our education efforts is the highly effective and all-inclusive Link Up Program developed by Carnegie Hall. The Orchestra Miami/ Carnegie Hall Link Up program is an initiative where 2,500 Miami Dade County Public School students annually perform WITH the orchestra during an interactive, dynamic concert. Orchestra Miami partners with the Carnegie Hall Weill Music Institute and the Miami Dade County Public Schools to present the program, which pairs Orchestra Miami with students in the 3rd through 5th grades to explore orchestral repertoire and fundamental musical skills, including creative work and composition, through a hands-on music curriculum. Students participate in weekly lessons with the music teachers at their schools, following the Carnegie Hall curriculum. In addition to the weekly classroom lessons, schools receive visits from members of the orchestra to demonstrate their instruments and engage with the students about music. At the end of the project period, participating students attend a culminating concert where they sing and play the recorder, violin or other instruments with the orchestra from their seats. The primary goals of the program are to teach confidence, collaboration and introduce fundamental musical concepts to students in grades 3–5, to introduce students to the orchestra, and to provide them with an opportunity to attend a professional orchestra concert where they can participate free of charge. Orchestra Miami prioritizes working with Title I schools, to ensure that students who may not otherwise have access are able to participate. With the loss of State funding, your support is more important than ever. Thank you for your consideration.
