Project Title: Arts Integration to Improve Literacy-Teaching Artist
Project Description:
The Center for Creative Education operates The Foundations School which focuses on the illiteracy crisis among regional students from low socio-economic households, marginalized communities, and zoned to attend an underperforming school. Last year, 89% of our third graders were reading at or above grade level by the end of the year. These results showed significant promise given that nearly half of the third graders in the eight schools proximal to the Center for Creative Education could not read at grade level, with the average reading proficiency score even lower at 23%. With these promising results and thirty years’ experience, the Center for Creative Education is requesting support for its arts-integrated model of learning.
The Center for Creative Education has a multi-pronged approach to tackling educational challenges, with the following core objectives:
Improve Literacy Rates: A primary focus is to increase reading proficiency among students, particularly those from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, marginalized communities, and underperforming schools.
Inspire Students Through Arts: The Center for Creative Education’s teaching approach integrates artistic expression (visual arts, music, dance) into the learning process to enhance engagement, creativity, and overall academic achievement.
Close the Achievement Gap: By providing targeted support and innovative learning methods, the Center for Creative Education ensures all students, regardless of their families’ economic status or current skills, have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
Break the Cycle of Poverty: Improved literacy and educational attainment are key factors in breaking the cycle of poverty. The Center for Creative Education’s goal is to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to pursue higher education and realize optimistic futures.
Foster Creative Expression: By incorporating art into the curriculum, the Center for Creative Education nurtures students’ creativity and self-expression, cultivating well-rounded individuals with a love for learning.
Total Project Budget: 40,000
Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Cultural Council of Palm Beach County, Palm Beach Community Trust (Wells Fargo)
Project Duration: 12 months
Geographical Area Served: CCE intentionally established The Foundations School in an area of West Palm Beach that lacks basic support systems and is home to some of the county’s poorest performing schools based on statestandardized testing. We concentrate our recruitment based on County’s Zip Code Report published by Children’s Services Council of Palm BeachCounty. This report ranks zip codes based on health and education factors that include, but are not limited to the percent of families with children in poverty, children scoring not ready for school, children scoring not reading on 3rd grade reading level, and high school graduation rates. The zip codes we focus on fail nearly all, if not all of those metrics and are labeled as the ‘most challenged zip codes’ in the county.
