Project Title: Hook ‘Em Early Fishing Events
Project Description:

The Ike Foundation is a non-profit organization founded by professional bass angler Mike “Ike” Iaconelli and his wife Becky. The foundation’s primary mission is to introduce urban and rural children to the sport of fishing, aiming to provide them with opportunities to experience nature, learn valuable life skills and develop an interest in environmental protection. The Ike Foundation organizes events, programs and initiatives focused on youth fishing education, conservation efforts and community involvement.
Research has shown that children who spend time outdoors have enhanced creativity and executive function, fewer behavior problems and an increased engagement and enthusiasm for learning. Children and youth who spend time in natural environments have proven to perform better in reading, math, social studies and science, and grow up to become better stewards of the environment.
Spending time outdoors also helps decrease the amount of time children and youth spend looking at screens. Since the pandemic, screen time usage has increased dramatically among youth throughout the country and has proven to have a detrimental impact on their physical, social and emotional development. This can lead to childhood obesity, depression and anxiety.
The Ike Foundation understands the intrinsic value of spending time outdoors. We are unique among other organizations that provide fishing instruction, as we also provide equipment – rods, reels and tackle boxes – to enable participants of our programs to continue fishing and enjoying the outdoors. The constituency we serve includes urban and rural youth throughout the United States.
Funding is requested to support the planning and offering of two Hook ‘Em Early fishing events to teach 200 underserved children to fish, develop a greater appreciation of the outdoors, and provide each of them with a rod, reel and tackle box so they may continue fishing and enjoying the outdoors long after the events are over.
