Project Title: ESL for Mothers and Their Children
Project Description:

Caroline House was established in response to a direct need in Bridgeport, Connecticut to break the cycle of poverty through education and to break down barriers of social and physical isolation that negatively impact the lives of low income, immigrant women and their children. At Caroline House women learn English as a Second Language and acquire the skills and information they need to navigate life in their new home. To help their children thrive we have an Early Childhood Education component, Afterschool tutoring for their second through eight graders , and Mommy and Me days where the mothers and their young children participate in activities together in the Early Childhood Education classroom

The Early Childhood Education program participants are two through five years old. They develop the skills they need to make the successful transition to kindergarten. Hands-on activities that foster a love of learning and build school-readiness. The curriculum and daily activities are designed to address ESL issues. The program is under the auspices of an pro early childhood education professional.

Children in grades 2-8 who are also English Language Learner receive tutoring that helps them to learn English and address other academic issues. The goal is to put them on a level playing field with their peers for whom English is a first language so that they are prepared for high school and can consider higher education.

Twenty years ago Karen M attended the Caroline House Early Childhood Education program while her mother Maria attended our ESL classes. Karen recently graduated from Fairfield University with a double major. She credits Caroline House with helping her family on their educational journey.
