Project Title: All Access Pass Sack Lunches, Meals, Free Snacks and Food Literacy
Project Description:

Our "Access Pass” allows youth whose families qualify financially or fall under the ALICE threshold — Asset Limited, Income Constrained, and Employed — earning more than the Federal Poverty Level, but not enough to afford the basics where they live; to register for special programs for free; access a free meal after school and, more recently, receive a sack lunch for school. Offering our “All Access Pass” Meal program is an effort to further support the youth we serve and help ensure their academic and social success, and physical and emotional wellbeing. We also offer free snacks during after school drop-in programs. Studies show that out of school snacks and meals contribute to the healthy growth and development of youth, particularly youth from low-income households. Snacks and meals are prepared by youth apprentices of our onsite social enterprise, The Moon Café, teaching the apprentices, 80% of whom are from LMI households themselves, the power of helping one another and instilling our value, “All of Us or None of Us.”

During the spring and summer months we offer a Gardening Club where youth learn to grow and try new foods, building their knowledge of and enthusiasm for fresh fruits and vegetables. Our Food Literacy efforts focus on emphasizing what nutrition looks like (carbs, fats, protein, fiber, micronutrients, etc) and how to add foods to our diets and things to our daily lives that help our micro biome and bodies as a whole, and we will address the mind-gut connection. We host one cooking class every other week, such as making miso soup, noodle making, and planting micro greens. The program includes planned field trips to the Prescott Farmers Market, local farm and gardens, and Sustainability Center at Prescott College, as well as cooking meals there.
