Project Title: Child Advocacy Judicial Trainings
Project Description:
The D.C. Children’s Institute (DCCI) has three primary programs built around its mission to provide child-centered interventions to help families navigate the emotional and logistical challenges of multifamily transitions, emphasizing the health and well-being of children throughout the court and judicial process. DCCI is a fledgling organization with decades of clinical and legal expertise, so it executes its premiere programming. As such, particulars are subject to change based on their effectivity, feasibility, and accessibility to youth and families. DCCI’s D.C. Courts CRA Training is designed to intervene at the legal system juncture of divorce, providing better mental health outcomes for children. This training aims to provide judges, attorneys, court administration, and staff of D.C. Family Court with specific instruction based on children and family psychology that will better long-term health and behavioral outcomes for children.
The training curriculum has been established in conjunction with teaching professionals whose academic and practice specialties are healthy management of high-conflict families. Each day-long training session will teach the audience of professionals how to put child advocates preferred theories into practice in each of their roles. Program enrollees will be familiarized with frequent examples of attachment theory, family systems theory, and other pertinent psychological models. Each professional will receive specific instruction relevant to their role in the family court system. DCCI staff will administer the CRA training in person at the Courthouse from 9 to 3 p.m. quarterly. The intended audience for this programming is D.C. Family Court judges, attorneys, court administration, and staff, led by DCCI collaboration with the honorable Justice R. John.
