Project Title: Barn to Heart Programs
Project Description:

Since 2015, NW Hearts United has provided empowerment and wellness programs in Whatcom, Skagit, Island, Snohomish, and King counties. Licensed, certified mental health and equine facilitated professionals work collaboratively with horses to heal and connect community one heart at a time.

We are requesting funds to support these services for approximately 100-125 youth. These would include Teen Mental Health & Empowerment, Mindfulness, LGBTQ+ and Gender Identity, BIPOC, Suicide Prevention, and Substance Use Recovery Treatment. Workshops allow youth to engage with horses, supportive adults and mentors, and peers to heal and build important life skills that identify strengths and desires, build emotional intelligence, provide skills for anxiety and stress management, decision-making, healthy relationships, and hope for a bright future.

We are extremely committed to supporting vulnerable and underserved community members in all of our locations: 29% of our clients are BIPOC, 48% identify as LGBTQ+, 60% diagnosed with spectrum disorders, 30% show suicidal ideation, 85% struggle with anxiety and 64% with depression (at intake). Most of our clients come from low-income families, with 85% of them qualifying for full or partial financial assistance.

Barriers such as cost, local availability, and cultural or personal biases against traditional methods can get in the way of people getting the care they need. So, we actively take steps to make our programming accessible (through services offered region-wide), approachable and less intimidating to participate (through nontraditional methods for healing and recovery), and affordable for them (thanks to contributions like yours that allow us to offer services for free or at a reduced fee to those that need it most). Our unique structure also ensures that 100% of our funding goes directly to the clients that need it instead of to the care and upkeep of a facility.
