Project Title: Food & supplies for children who are brought to CAP in emergency interviews (late nights & weekends)
Project Description:
The Children’s Advocacy Project (CAP) coordinates the investigation and prosecution of child abuse crimes in Wyoming. Our work includes child abuse intervention, prevention, and child advocacy work. Our main service is the Forensic Interview (FI) where child victims have an opportunity to specifically describe the traumatic events of their abuse with a CAP staff member who is skilled in speaking to child victims in a manner that is not only conducted at the child’s developmental level but is also legally defensible in court. The FI is observed from another room by a CAP Team that includes law enforcement and child protection investigators, as well as a prosecutor. The CAP Team uses the information provided during the FI to jump start the investigation ,ultimately ensuring perpetrators are held accountable for their crimes.
While difficult to talk about, circumstances that bring children to us sometimes require that we provide emergency food so that the children are safe and have some basic items. We stock prepackaged foods, child friendly snacks, and anything that you might imagine that would comfort and support a child in this emergency and transitional moment. Supplemental to our direct service programs and general operations, food makes a difference to the child (age 2 and up) who may be hungry and scared. With the funds requested, we will purchase snacks, child-friendly and shelf stable foods that can meet an immediate need within the broader picture of coordinating interviews and providing counseling to child(ren). Our model centers around providing the best and most efficient care for child abuse victims by reducing the harm and trauma that comes from multiple interviews. Having items on hand so that the first thing we can do is address basic needs (food, safety) is complimentary to our entire process of intervention, support, and healing.
