Project Title: Global Arts for Global Kids
Project Description:
The New York City Borough of Queens is the nation’s most diverse county. At Flushing Town Hall we celebrate this as the area’s leading presenter of global arts programs, which include our Global Arts for Global Kids: Arts Education, Arts Equity program. Through this program we create opportunities for thousands of talented students from public schools in some of the City’s most underserved communities to enjoy student centered in school arts education.
The key elements of our arts education program are:
• School Performance Series, which since its inception, this program has offered thousands of students their first experience of a professional live performance—an experience whose value has multiplied many times post-shutdown.
• In School Residencies, which over 10 weeks of sequential, project-based learning with one teaching artist develop students’ creativity and powers of self-expression while also deepening understanding of their and their fellow students’ cultures.
• Workshops and Assemblies which are one-time events that feature a teaching artist who works with a group of up to 30 students to introduce them to a culturally relevant art form as well as a professional performance for school-wide audiences.
One of the great advantages enjoyed by our students is their rich cultural heritages, however there is frequently limited cross-cultural understanding, and this is something we are well positioned to address. With the support of the Hermanowski Family Foundation, we will be able to deepen classroom learning and family engagement, celebrate our communities’ cultures and encourage cross cultural understanding, create opportunities for self-expression, and build students’ cultural self-confidence while helping reduce the achievement gap that many of them face.
