Project Title: Kidznotes’ Mozart Afterschool Music Program
Project Description:

Kidznotes is a Durham, NC nonprofit working to catalyze social change and increase arts equity by providing culturally relevant and community-focused after-school music education to children with the fewest resources and the greatest need. Kidznotes respectfully requests a $10,000 investment from the Hermanowski Family Foundation to support our Mozart (beginning violin) Program, which operates in Title I public schools in Durham. The Mozart Program provides life-changing music education and creative social-emotional learning experiences to first and second-grade students living in underserved communities in Durham, NC. Students receive free group music instruction in violin twice weekly from professional teaching artists, who work in a collaborative model with teachers from each school site. The program offers free instrument provision for the year, nutritious snacks, and a supportive and positive environment. The Mozart Program develops our young musicians’ perceptions of community through music, empowers their talents, and builds self-discipline, persistence, and confidence.

With your support during the 2024-25 school year, Kidznotes plans to increase Mozart Program enrollment from 34 to 90 students across three Durham Public School sites: your investment will fund one of these sites. Many Mozart students go on to participate in our Nucleo program, where they learn additional instruments and form peer ensemble orchestras. This year, 45% of students we serve are Black, 33% are Latinx, and a majority come from low-income families. Kidznotes understands that students who participate in arts learning have higher academic performance, graduation rates, and post-graduation achievement. Yet, the national decline in access to arts education over the past two decades is most drastic among Black, Hispanic, and low-income youth (Source: National Endowment for the Arts). Kidnotes closes opportunity gaps and transforms students’ lives (and ultimately the communities where they live), by providing no-cost arts experiences they would otherwise be unable to access.
