Project Title: Youth Art Accessibility Project
Project Description:

The Sun Gallery has operated in Hayward since 1961 and has youth art programming in our gallery, artist studio, maker space and for our stage and courtyard. We offer free STEAM classes on Saturdays for local families and are using more tech (3d printer, video editing, large format printers, sewing machines, laser cutter) to provide students in our area with access to technology and skills they would not be able to in many of their homes.

We need additional funding to do outreach and staffing but more importantly we need to upkeep the machines we have and add to our current maker space. We will continue our Upcycle Ocean classes next year as well as our student art shows (fees and membership waived for all kids under 21) and add programming tools (books, sensory stations, science kits) to our art camps. We also have a free resource library for the program but most of the current 1,500 books need updating. We also need supplies for our free Build a Better Birdhhouse competition for high school students in January.

Our main needs for the grant are:
Maker Space tech upkeep
Advertising our free programs to local youth
STEAM kits and programming material
Updated library
Art materials for free family STEAM Saturdays
Additional certification for our volunteer teachers

We would also use the materials for our free Boy Scout and Girl Scout art workshops. We have had three this month alone giving local troops the gallery tour, hiring the teacher for the workshop and buying the supplies as well as displaying their art work in the gallery so that they can earn their badges. We would like to offer it more widely but the cost of qualified teachers is a hurdle. The volunteers are amazing but additional staffing hours are required.

Total Project Budget: $10,000
