Project Title: THE RISE UP CHALLENGE
Project Description:
“Anti-Bullying has remained a top priority for schools – before the pandemic, during the pandemic, and post-pandemic.” – Sucada Bell, CIS’ Senior Director of Partnerships
Bullying is an epidemic. The statistics are alarming:
1 in 3 youth are cyberbullied; Cyberbullying increased 73% during the pandemic.
160,000 students skip school each year due to bullying.
Suicide is now the second leading cause of death among teens; bullying is often a factor.
The short and long-term mental health impact of bullying includes anxiety, depression, suicide ideation and more.
The RISE UP Challenge aims to empower youth to see their light within and become upstanders to end bullying. This grant would help us bring a powerful Anti-Bullying assembly, led by a father who tragically lost his 11-year-old son to bullying, to high school students in Chicago. This assembly has been transforming, and even saving young lives, across the country. Witnessing his gripping story, students are empowered to become advocates for change within their school and communities.
Following the assembly, students will participate in workshops such as one led by Humanity Rising Ambassador Devin Moore. Devin turned his painful experience of being racially cyberbullied into purpose and is teaching students about self-esteem and how to be an upstander. Through active engagement, students champion kindness and allyship in their daily interactions. We will also feature outstanding young changemakers on our youth-led podcasts, amplifying their impact and inspiring peers nationwide.
"Since Humanity Rising has been coming to our school, we’re seeing more students love themselves and each other." – Cynthia Leung, Assistant Principal, George Westinghouse College Prep, East Garfield Park, Chicago.
By investing in this project, the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation will help students transform their lives and become catalysts for a brighter, more compassionate future.
