Project Title: Early Childhood Program Outdoor Play
Project Description:

The Early Childhood Program at Academy of the Sacred Heart provides a caring, year-round learning environment for children from birth through Preschool. This flexible, developmental program allows children to explore and build self-confidence through play. Early childhood educators create a compassionate, secure atmosphere with myriad opportunities to stimulate the brain during its most active state of development, building a foundation for future academic and social success.

Age-appropriate activities are designed for, and specific to, the needs of each child, with weekly themes woven into the structure of the day. Children listen to and make music, create art, visit the library, learn finger plays, discuss religion, play in the sand, listen to stories and poems, and become aware of the world around them. Children play outdoors (weather permitting) twice a day or in one of our gyms.

In early childhood, play means many things. It means climbing almost everything, creating imaginary worlds, exploring sensations and making new friends. During this crucial stage of life, infants and toddlers experience remarkable growth, both physically, socially and cognitively. One of our primary objectives is to support the holistic development of these tiny adventurers. Through play, children in this age group are gaining essential skills, including strength, stability, and motor skills. We want to create an outdoor play space that also offers opportunities for cognitive, social and emotional development.

Structures that offer sensory panels for exploration, little crawl tunnels, and spaces to encourage imaginative play, while also keeping our littlest students safe is paramount. We want to provide an environment that is thoughtfully crafted to allow young ones to touch, climb, and be challenged. Playground components need to be sized just right for toddlers and preschoolers so they can challenge themselves in ways that are appropriate to their size and developmental level.
