Project Title: National Youth Arts Council (planning/launch phase)
Project Description:

Founded in 1937, the National Guild for Community Arts Education is the sole national service organization for providers of community arts education.

We seek support to create a National Youth Arts Council (NYAC) for diverse young artists across the nation. The NYAC will provide 12 young artists, age 13-18, a forum to express themselves and to develop stronger skills in leadership, communication, collaboration, and civic engagement through a range of activities.

We are eager to learn from the project planning phase how best to better engage young people with community arts education. Our recent organizational transformation and strategic plan has highlighted our need to broaden our brand (moving to TikTok and other social media that young people prefer, utilizing more video, etc.) to reach youth, and young artists. We will share these insights with our individual and organizational members, and it will inform the Guild’s daily work and annual advocacy and programming agendas.

After we conduct a comprehensive needs assessment to understand the diverse aspirations of young artists, we will develop a curriculum that nurtures artistic talents and integrates leadership and civic engagement components. Timeline:

Months 1-5
Onboard youth and adult consultants
Conduct needs assessment to inform project planning and curriculum development
Gather input from diverse communities
Hire Program Coordinator

Months 6-12
Develop/finalize curriculum
Secure selection committee members
National call for applications (youth and mentors)
Selection committee review applications, notify participants

We anticipate the NYAC will be a two-year commitment with year-round curriculum (1-1 mentoring, peer collaboration, monthly workshops and meetings, and key youth-driven events: Year 1: choose a civic issue they care about and, with mentor guidance, develop arts-related projects to present in their local communities; Year 2: plan and attend a two-day in-person Gathering with keynote speakers, workshops, presentations, networking and collaboration.
