Project Title: Mental Health Support & Leadership Development for LGBTQ Youth
Project Description:

We respectfully request your consideration of a grant in the amount of $10,000 to support our LGBTQ Mental Health & Leadership Development Project. Funding will be directed to defray the direct costs of staff salaries, benefits, and supplies associated with this program to serve more than 245 youth ages 13 to 20 in Miami-Dade County in one year.

LGBTQ young people face a number of unique challenges that impact their well-being and development. This is not inherent in being LGBTQ, but rather a result of the mistreatment and stigmatization that many LGBTQ young people experience within their families, at school, and in other spaces in the community. These challenges lead to LGBTQ youth in Miami being 4x more likely to attempt suicide than their peers.

To support our youth in achieving a full and healthy development, in 2025 we will provide 145 LGBTQ Youth with direct Mental Health Services through four core efforts: care coordination, individual counseling, group counseling, and family support. As a result of these services, 90% of youth will increase overall resilient capacities and their proactive coping skills. Youth will also decrease overall scores of symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Through our ChangeMakers Leadership Institute, we will inspire 100 LGBTQ youth to action and deliver 30 youth-centered trainings and educational programs to the community. This initiative provides LGBTQ youth with the opportunity to develop as leaders, critical thinkers, and community activists by learning foundational knowledge on LGBTQ history, systems of oppression, community organizing strategies, and political conscious raising on local, state, and policy levels. Each year’s class of leaders also identifies and implements a project specific to their community’s needs. (Our 2023 class constructed “Little Libraries” stocked with banned books in Miami-Dade — details at https://www.miaminewtimes.com/news/little-libraries-seek-to-buck-florida-book-bans-and-lgbtq-censorship-17446952)

Total Project Budget: $702,414
