Project Title: Angels of America’s Fallen: Children’s Activity Program
Project Description:
Angels of America’s Fallen (Angels) honors Fallen U.S. military and first responders by supporting the dreams of their children. Angels was formed in Colorado Springs, Colorado in 2012 as a nationwide program to address a crucial gap in the support provided to children of fallen military and first responders between grief counseling at the time of loss and college scholarships available in adulthood. Angels provides trauma-informed, client-centered case management, outreach, referrals, and long-term support for healthy developmental extra-curricular activities and peer mentorship at no cost to children of Fallen military and first responders from the time of loss until they reach the age of 19. Pairing children with a mentor in their activity of choice contributes to healing from grief and loss, helps build resilience, and addresses risk factors for depression, low self-esteem, and mental health issues for children who lose their parents in service to our country and communities.
Angels currently serves 550 children and their 350 families across the U.S. Surviving family members are supported in whichever community they reside or move to follow the death of their loved one, ensuring continuity of support for children who have already lost so much. Angels engages children in healthy developmental activities, helping them find an activity they are passionate about, to build resilience and mitigate risk factors. The support of the Hermanowski Family Foundation will assist Angels to walk alongside families of the Fallen, covering expenses related to outreach, case management, and costs of the children’s activity fees, supplies, clothing, and equipment when necessary. Children of the Fallen are encouraged to participate in sports, music, the arts, or other extracurricular pursuits according to their interests. By engaging in extracurricular activities with consistent mentorship, the children can excel and develop a strong sense of self-worth despite their loss.
