Project Title: College Readiness Program
Project Description:
Our College Readiness Program, targeted to low-income minority students in grades 9-12, has been growing since 2014 and now operates in four Palm Beach County Title One high schools: Village Academy and Atlantic High School in Delray Beach, Boynton Beach Community High School and Santaluces High School in Lantana with plans to expand to two additional schools by 2026. Our high schools average 91.65% minority enrollment. We project serving 180 students in the four current schools for the 2024/25 school year. Our model includes intensive ACT/SAT tutoring by trained/certified teachers from the students’ own schools. The tutors report to school-based program coordinators who ensure the efficacy of the program under the guidance of our CEO, Dr. Shannon Solis.
Students in 9th grade are new to our program and are receiving rigorous academic tutoring that improves their grades, and along with our college tours, begins to plant the seed for attending college. Armed with improved academic skills and test preparation, our older students take the ACT/SAT exams multiple times free of charge to improve their confidence and their test scores. Participants receive personal assistance with college applications and with pursuit of scholarship support. Every student in the program is encouraged to attend our comprehensive college tours of Florida’s respected public universities. Many of our students come from homes where English is not the primary language and nearly every student we serve will be the first in their family to attend college. Backed by studies from Harvard’s Graduate School of Education and from the National Research Institute, we have developed a winning formula. One hundred and twenty of our Bound For College alumni are either attending college with significant scholarship support or have already received their college degrees and successfully joined the workforce.
