Project Title: Mental Health and Educational Programming for Latino Youth in Atlanta
Project Description:

Ser Familia’s youth programming meets the growing mental health and educational needs in the community through integrated services with tutoring, mentoring, physical activities, hands-on learning, life skills and career exploration, health/wellbeing sessions, and counseling, all based on model programming and evidence-based practices that are culturally and linguistically proficient. In the state of Georgia, Hispanic high school aged youth had the highest rates of response on all measures associated with depression and suicide on the Georgia’s YRBSS. Georgia has among the lowest levels of mental health care for children (ages 2 to 17) with emotional, developmental, or behavioral problems among the fifty states. In 2021, the agency received 112% more domestic violence calls, and now, the number of youth reporting suicidal ideations has increased dramatically (from ~20% pre-pandemic to over 65% currently), with SF serving a child as young as 8. Child sexual abuse calls have skyrocketed; we have had a 231% documented increase in sexual abuse due to doubling/tripling up in housing.
Ser Familia has youth programs for Middle school (C.A.F.E. Kids) and high school (RJ) youth through which children and youth are provided out of school time services through holistic After School Programming in alignment with the school day, including integrated services with tutoring, mentoring, physical activities, hands-on learning, life skills and career exploration, health/wellbeing sessions, and counseling, all based on model programming and evidence-based practices that are culturally and linguistically proficient. After school programming builds upon a solid and strong foundation of constructive family programming and productive activities and provide an outlet for academic success and overall positive youth development leading to ultimate self-sufficiency. Ser Familia ensures that youth are properly registered for school and have the supplies they need for the school year, and Ser Familia assesses for educational lags/challenges.
