Project Title: CASA Youth Advocacy for Abused and Neglected Children
Project Description:
Located in Media, Delaware County, PA, CASA Youth Advocates meets the needs of adjudicated dependent children and youth. Our mission is empowering community volunteers to connect with and champion children and youth involved in the child welfare system, advocating for equity, resources, stability, and permanency. We have a full-time staff of 16, two part-time employees, and 149 active volunteers.
Advocacy is our core program. Advocacy comes in the form of an adult dedicating his/her time to form a meaningful and stable relationship with a child. Advocates visit the child monthly wherever they are living and go with the child to court. In court, CASA volunteers are champions for whatever is in the best interest of the child. CASA serves children and youth in Delaware or Chester Counties.
We serve a diverse population of children–47% are Black or African American; 11% Hispanic; 33% Caucasian; 10% Multiracial. 100% are living below federal poverty guidelines. CASA children are ages 0-21 yrs. CASA children have a whole wide range of strengths, needs, developmental abilities, medical and mental health diagnoses, and educational and intellectual levels. All children have experienced significant trauma, including physical and/or sexual abuse, medical or educational neglect, abandonment, and homelessness.
Advocates give children their time and attention. Advocates gather records, make recommendations for additional support and services, and collaborate with other professionals to ensure the needs of the child are being met. The judge is given a comprehensive report at every court hearing.
In the context of the overwhelming child welfare system, CASA children experience a revolving door of adults. CASA’s goal is stability and consistency for advocate-child relationships. Children whose cases have closed in the past five years, had one consistent CASA advocate for the entirety of their time in the program.
