Project Title: Chess for Success After School Programs
Project Description:
Chess for Success (CFS) is seeking $10,000 in general operating support from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation to operate 115 after school chess clubs in the United States for the 2024-2025 school year, benefiting approximately 2500 k-12 students. Chess for Success uses the game of chess to help youth succeed in school and in life. Our mission is to develop community, connection, and confidence by learning and playing chess, helping students build the academic, social, and emotional skills necessary for future success. CFS is dedicated to helping K-12 students in Oregon, Southwest Washington and Hawaii reach their full potential by mitigating the educational gap in Title 1 schools, with a focus on BIPOC, low-income, and rural communities.
CFS chess club programming is offered in schools and in community centers throughout Oregon, Southwest Washington and Hawaii. Students receive three hours of instruction and practice per week from October to April from chess coaches who are trained with our standardized curriculum. CFS participants play in tournaments for free, and the students design their own club shirts and receive a chess set and board to keep. Our after school programs use chess instruction as a foundation and add social emotional skills such as mindfulness, acceptance of situations, change oriented strategies, emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. Building these skills significantly improves self-esteem, behavior and academic performance. The program incorporates an intentional focus on the application of chess strategies and learned skills to the students’ everyday life, not just game play.
