Project Title: The C.H.O.I.C.E.S. Mobile Food Pantry Program
Project Description:
CHOICES addresses the complex and interrelated issues of food insecurity, poor nutrition, obesity, and diabetes through intergenerational and culturally responsive programming. At The C.H.O.I.C.E.S. Community Teaching Kitchen, we use innovative approaches to move disadvantaged children and families from the margins into the center of the healthy eating and living movement. Since 2002, we have promoted food as fun and medicine, believing cooking can be cool and enjoyable! Our primary purpose is to teach children about the importance of eating healthy snacks. Our secondary purpose is to teach families the skills needed to purchase and prepare healthy meals at home. And lastly, we are a community resource to increase accessibility to healthy foods in a dignified manner for underserved neighborhoods.

The C.H.O.I.C.E.S. Mobile Food Pantry program seeks to reduce the impact of food insecurity in Metro Atlanta. This program provides multiple distribution methods to those who cannot afford food. We currently provide one pantry day per month for the general public and an additional pantry day specifically for Seniors. We focus on serving families with low incomes who live in Metro Atlanta food deserts in Fulton, DeKalb, and Gwinnett Counties. These families face socio-economic barriers to accessing and preparing affordable, nutritious meals at home. As an organization ,we primarily serve Black/African-American and Hispanic communities, which disproportionately suffer from food inequity and resulting health disparities. Last year, we provided 1.486 million meals to 24,041 families with our mobile food pantry program. This year, we plan to provide 800,000 meals to 12,000 families and provide literacy education to 3,000 children in partnership with six Atlanta Public Schools.
