Project Title: Math Literacy for Underpriviledged 3rd and 4th graders
Project Description:

We are seeking funding for a math skills coaching program which targets underprivileged elementary school students who are not meeting state standards. The program goal is to increase math skills so that students meet or exceed standards within 2 years. Students will receive after school coaching and tutoring 2-4 times per week. IXL software will assess and track student progress so that we can show a measurable impact. An experienced outside group called the Math Agency will train and administer locally recruited volunteers to do the small group coaching. The Math Agency will also help engage with student families. Our PTA is choosing to partner with The Math Agency due to their spectacular results in nearby elementary schools with similar poverty rates and demographics to our own school (https://themathagency.com/). Their methods have been shown to double the rate at which students learn math, which based on past results goes from 0.7 grade levels per year to 1.4 grade levels per year. By enrolling 3rd and 4th graders for 2 years we can ensure these students will meet standards by the time they graduate 5th grade. Volunteers will be recruited from within our school community and will have the full support of our PTA. I will personally volunteer as a math coach if we receive enough funding.
Our school is classified as a Title 1 school with 56% of our children living in low income homes, 14% experiencing homelessness, and 31% learning English. The demographics are a majority-minority school population with 44% white students and the rest a mix of Black/African, Hispanic/Latino, Asian, and others. The impact to our community is clear – these students will have the opportunity to receive much needed supplemental instruction so that they can succeed alongside their more fortunate peers in years to come.

Total Project Budget: $46k for 1 grade level 1 year, $275k for 2 grade levels plus additional students for 2 years
