Project Title: Commodore Sloat School Learning Garden
Project Description:
Our School Learning Garden was created to be part of our K-5 school curriculum, complete with a certified gardening instructor who develops grade-specific, hands-on lesson plans for each of the 16 classes that meet each week (a total of ~390 students).
Our student population (age 5 – 12) lives in the City of San Francisco, Nearly 46% of our student body is eligible for free or reduced lunches and 79% are non-white. In our urban environment, opportunities to grow a garden are few and far between. Most students live in apartments, flats, or in homes with very little outdoor space that isn’t paved over with concrete or manicured with ornamentals.
Our gardening program invites students to get their hands dirty as they experience both the patience and excitement involved in seeing the different stages of plant growth. We have also recently incorporated a chicken coop with two chicks that will begin laying eggs in the next couple of months, further enriching the students’ learning experiences and opportunities to be involved with animal husbandry.
Weekly lessons are designed to engage students’ minds, bodies, creativity, and connection with each other and with nature. Depending on what’s happening in the garden, students are involved in tilling soil, planting seeds, observing plant growth and processes, weeding, composting, watering, harvesting fruits, and finally harvesting seeds for future planting seasons. Each semester the classes have a chance to prepare a meal with produce from the garden, experiencing with all five senses the fruits of their collaboration with nature. And as the chickens develop, the eggs they lay will become part of the learning and culinary experience.
We are seeking funding to continue building this amazing program through the 2024-2025 school year and beyond. We need $60,000 total, with $48,000 committed and $18,000 left to raise.
