Project Title: 2024-2025 Apprenticeships
Project Description:
Children’s Theatre Workshop (CTW) will hire young people from the greater Toledo, OH region to work in theatre production and education as apprentices, in 2024-2025.
This program is necessary, largely because Toledo is embarrassingly behind in the theatre scene compared to other Ohio cities of its size, like Dayton or Akron. We don’t have professional theatres within an hour’s drive (nearest is Cleveland). Our young talent has nowhere to go to receive mentorship and training, so they leave Toledo to pursue better opportunities. This program provides practical skills regardless of future theatrical participation, but it also provides real hands-on training in a range of theatre jobs.
We will recruit, interview, hire, and train young people between the ages of 16 and 22 for this program. For the school year, we will offer six (6) youth up to 10 hours of work per week in one of three fields: costuming, technical theatre, and education. In the summer, available work will be expanded to six (6) full time equivalent positions, in the same fields.
The technical theatre apprentices will work with our Technical Director, who prepares all technical elements for CTW’s productions. They will practice carpentry skills by building sets, paint, focus stage lights, program lighting and sound boards, handle sound equipment, and help manage backstage and front of house needs.
The education apprentices will work with the Executive Artistic Director and Outreach Coordinator to assist teaching artist staff in all CTW educational programs. These apprentices will help plan curriculum and lesson plans for prek-12th grades, teach classes alongside teaching artists, assist in gathering and organizing evaluation data, and learn classroom management.
The costume apprentices will work with the Costume Shop Manager to assist in costume design, costume pulling and fitting, taking actor measurements, building costumes, maintenance and repair, and cleaning costumes.
