Project Title: Summer Academic Program for 5th-8th Grade Students with Limited Opportunities
Project Description:
Breakthrough San Francisco is a college access and teacher training program committed to educational opportunity. In pursuit of this goal, we provide intensive, out-of-school time enrichment and support to motivated San Francisco students with limited educational opportunities, while training the next generation of educators.
We make an eight-year investment in our students – from the summer after fourth grade until they graduate high school, with optional persistence support during college. Each year, we serve approximately 230 students, most of whom will be the first in their families to attend a four-year college. We’re proud that 100% of students in our first six graduating high school classes have enrolled in college, including 90% in four-year schools.
Breakthrough San Francisco respectfully requests funding from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation for our 2025 summer academic program for 135 rising fifth through eighth grade students.
Each day during the summer program, students take challenging academic classes in math, science, literature, and writing, engaging in meaningful discussions and projects while building a foundation for the upcoming school year. Our classes are engaging and full of hands-on projects; in science, for example, students might create egg drop vehicles or dissect pigs’ hearts. Because classes are small – just 8 – 9 students each – students receive personalized attention. In addition, a study hall in the afternoon enables students to get started on their homework with help from their teachers. Also each afternoon, students also attend elective classes, such as dance, coding, or soccer, and weekly special events that expand their horizons, like STEM Olympics, College Day, and Career Day.
Through all of these endeavors, students become part of a strong, diverse community, including friendships with other college-bound youth and close, lasting relationships with our teachers and staff, enabling them to take risks and persevere. Our summer program prevents learning loss, supports students’ wellness and social-emotional development, builds students’ connection to our strong community, and keeps their sights set on college.
