Project Title: Academic and Mental Health Support in a Residential Setting
Project Description:
For over three decades, AMIkids Georgetown has been on a mission to empower young people to become confident, successful adults, helping them to believe in themselves and believe success is possible. We foster relationships, care, and a sense of family. And we provide structure. Our Personal Growth Model is a proven success: tying together education and workforce development, treatment, and behavior and skills training. Through our unwavering dedication and personalized care, we help them discover their true potential, transforming their lives and creating a ripple effect of positive change in our community.
Our program serves young male teenagers who have current or prior involvement with the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice. They are placed into our care at our residential facility in lieu of incarceration.
If you ask any group of kids gathered in one of our classrooms to raise their hands if they have a close family member in prison, you’ll see nearly every hand in the room go up. Due to institutional barriers, systematic injustice, and a powerful school-to-prison pipeline, the kids we serve are on track to becoming another statistic. Despite their own personal attributes and character, they lack many of the necessary tools and access to services that would change their trajectory, and they are likely to follow the same path walked by many in their own families and neighborhoods.
These young men are in need of intensive services that include educational assistance, behavioral health support, mental health and substance abuse treatment, and career readiness and vocational training. With the proper direction, support, and encouragement, these boys are full of latent potential. We help remove obstacles to their development so that they can go on to be successful, happy, and productive members of our community.
