Project Title: Tools to Support Children and Teens in Crisis
Project Description:

Youth Haven seeks support from the Hermanowski Family Foundation for tools that provide Home, Hope, & Healing to abused, neglected and homeless children and teens ages 6-20.

Licensed by the Florida Department of Children’s Services and the Children’s Network of Southwest Florida, Youth Haven is the sole emergency shelter in Southwest Florida providing immediate care to at-risk youth aged 6 to 18. Youth Haven also offers extended residence, with an average stay of 270 days. The Homeless Teen Transitional Living Program is the only program in Collier County for youth experiencing homelessness. Residents receive individual service plans and life skills classes that promote independence and housing readiness. Rob’s Group Home, Youth Haven’s Transitional Living Cottage, offers comprehensive 24-hour care for homeless unaccompanied youth ages 16 to 20 who require a longer length of stay.

While government funding provides the bare minimum for each client supported, over the past two years, Youth Haven has dramatically expanded programs and services to respond to the increase in the severity of trauma and mental health issues suffered by the youth arriving for help. Foster care youth are at a higher risk of experiencing many Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) like abuse and violence, leading to toxic stress and long-term problems. Youth Haven residents report experiencing an average of 7.2 out of 10 possible ACEs. 50% experienced eight or more and 97% four or more. Youth Haven utilizes tools like the Children’s Functional Assessment Rating Scale, Related Life Events Screener and Child PTSD Symptom Scale to measure their progress.

Youth Haven residents receive comprehensive care and counseling to aid their healing in a therapeutic environment. Programs include therapies, education, activities and life skills provided on an 18.5-acre trauma-informed campus to prepare them for a healthy, self-sufficient future.
