Project Title: Carvers of the Future
Project Description:

This project is a high school aged wood carving course at the Historic Carousel and Museum. As avid enthusiasts of woodworking and firm believers in the value of hands-on education, we are excited about the prospect of collaborating with your institution to continue to offer this opportunity to students in our community.

Wood carving is a traditional craft that fosters creativity, encourages patience, precision, and attention to detail. We believe that our course not only provides students with a unique outlet for self-expression but also equips them with valuable skills that they can carry forward into future endeavors.

The Historic Carousel and Museum, with its rich history and dedication to preserving traditional craftsmanship, presents an ideal setting for such a course. Its collection of intricately carved wooden figures and its commitment to educational outreach make it the perfect venue to inspire and nurture young talents in the art of wood carving. Many people of our community think the carousel is full and complete. We are not. We currently have 44 animals on the carousel and space for 7 more. We also have holiday and alternate animals still to carve. The sad fact is many of our carvers have begun aging out. With the realization we have many years of carving still ahead of us, let alone revitalizing the tradition itself, we have a responsibility to pass the artistic torch on to the next generation and honor our part in keeping its light burning.

The course covers basic carving techniques, tool safety, design principles, and the cultural significance of wood carving traditions. Additionally, practical sessions where students can work on their own projects under the guidance of experienced instructors. All students that successfully complete the course are given their carving sets to continue their growth in this beautiful art form.

Total Project Budget: We do our best to provide at least two courses per year, so these numbers have been doubled from single course costs, to include both sessions in our funding request: (Carving Kits: $1800.00 – Sharpening Tools: $800 – Lanyards/Tags: $100 – Staff Time: $700 – Celebration/Certificates: $150 – TOTAL EXPENSES: $3350.00)

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): We have a potential funder for 2024 and about $600 remaining in the recent budget to go towards this year- Waiting to hear back about that grant proposal, but it would only apply to this calendar year 2024. We have also reached out to STEAM/LBCC and asked about grant inquiries (as they have supported us in the past). At this time there are none.
