Project Title: Youth and Family Services Back to School Drive and Social
Project Description:

In 2018, the Youth and Family Services Department of Oak Park and River Forest Township saw a need for access to free school supplies for youth in the community. In response to this need, the Back-to-School Supply Drive and Social was created to help start youth on more equal grounds as they begin the school year and to promote the value of primary education and literacy for youth. The event started to provide school-age residents of Oak Park River Forest and surrounding communities with backpacks filled with school supplies to prepare for the start of the school year. As time progressed, the event has grown into an event for families to gather and celebrate the upcoming school year.
Several community agencies and organizations, such as the public libraries, the Collaboration for Early Childhood, and the Park District of Oak Park, attend and provide youth-based activities for the event. Youth can receive free haircuts from local barbers, have their face painted, register their bikes with the Oak Park Police Department, and return home with a new backpack filled with school supplies. In preparation for the 7th annual supply drive and social, the 10,000 grant would allow the event to grow significantly by providing youth with all the necessary tools and supplies and setting them up for academic success. The funds would be used to purchase school supplies such as rulers, pens, pencils, and folders, hygiene products, the cost of vendors and stipends to barbers but, more importantly, provide youth with a new sustainable backpack.
