Project Title: Ready for Good Jobs
Project Description:

The project is to create an employment coaching role, and related added supports, for transition-age youth, aged 14-21, who are in foster care and the juvenile justice system, to foster their long-term success and reduce the likelihood of future unemployment, incarceration, or homelessness.

We run a nonprofit furniture store and job training program called "Furnished for Good." This program provides basic education in employer expectations and work experience in a real furniture store.

Our graduates complete a ten-week program that covers 12 job and life skills that prepare youth for success in the workplace and the community.

The employment coach would be certified to help at-risk youth as they transition to adulthood. Specifically, he/she will support graduates, post-program, to find employment opportunities in the community, at partner employers, and connect to trade school opportunities in the area, since 95% of the youth we serve, statistically, will not graduate college.

The employment coach will also help youth take next steps that keep them moving forward in career and/or education, whatever those are, as they navigate the transition to adulthood with little or no family support.

25% of the youth we work with, within 2 years of turning 18, become involved in the adult criminal justice system, or are homeless. This is our attempt to steer youth into pathways that make sense for them, keeping them growing and busy, as well as providing reasons to hope and live.

Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): REDF ($20,000 committed), KDOC-JS ($15,000 committed), Deffenbaugh Foundation ($20,000 prospective), DCCF Momentum Fund ($10,000 committed), and Hermanowski Foundation ($5,000 potential)

Project Duration: 1 year. All funds contributed to be used during program launch year (roughly October 2024 – October 2025). We are launching a second social enterprise in 2024 that will provide ongoing, sustainable revenue that we project will cover the cost of the employment coach and related supports in subsequent years.
